 1- LEARNING STYLES   INVENTORY

First of all, I would like to share with you about learning styles. Generally, every mankind has their own learning styles. So, basically intellectual have classified some general purpose of learning styles.

So, here are main learning styles that are commonly known as auditory, visual and kinesthetic.

Therefore, I also did some exercises during my meeting with Madam Wan Nordini Binti Hasnor to find out what kind of learning styles that I actually have so that I can use some effective ways to improve my study skills in order to adapt with the varsity level.

Based on the learning styles inventory score, I’ve got the same score for visual and kinesthetic styles while the lowest one is auditory style. So, this means I’m more likely to practice whatever that I’ve studied, do a demonstration and so forth to memorise. But, to be honest, somehow all the learning styles seems to suit me well in different ways because I usually tend to use a different kind of measures according to certain circumstances as the combination between these learning styles are needed to strengthen our ability to retain information. Just be creative and and have a fun!

However, there are some people that just like me; I mean, they are prefer to use multi-sensory technique in their daily studies routine as this method is just not effective but it’s also exciting.

For example,

1- Combining Visual and Auditory Modes

For this learning styles, we can rewrite notes using different colours and reading out loud. Perhaps, we also can create mind maps, flow charts and diagrams using bright colours and discuss the material that you have been learning with a friend or study group.

2- Combining Auditory and Kinesthetic  Modes

Meanwhile, for this style, we can use rhyme  and dance or clap to memorise information. Besides, we also can listen to the instructor’s lecture tape and try to rewrite on a computer keyboard to strengthen our memory.

However, whatever it is, just do it with your own styles as only you know yourself better than anyone else.

2- GOALS STATEMENTS   ( THE FIVE STEPS APPROACH)

Based on my opinion,  GOALS  are the things that we eagerly and truly want to achieve in every moment. However, in order to create our own goals, there are some guidelines that we have to follow so that the goals are well-established and easy to accomplish it. So, our goals should be SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE, REALISTIC  and TIMELY (SMART).

For me, goals are extremely important especially when we’re in varsity level as everything must be done by ourselves and no more spoon-fed like our secondary school’s life. If we make our own goals, we’ll be more motivated to achieve it and of course automatically we won’t dismissed the classes, never procrastinate to do assignments, study smart to score in exams and many more. A fine goal will absolutely encourage us to be a better person within time and turn on the positive vibes and so do the other way round.

So, we have to take the five steps concept which is well-known as Five Steps Approach into our consideration.

Both academic and personal goals are significant  and they are often achieved in a simultaneous time line as they are closely linked to each other.

But in this post, I would like to stress more on my academic goals. These are some of my goals, so here you go.

However, sorry to say this but as you can see below,  I’ll include just one of my goals using the five steps approach method that I’ve learned before this.

 3- FIXED-COMMITMENT CALENDAR

Generally, every mankind all over the world need a systematic time management as it is extremely important to ensure that all of our task can be done on time. So, in this topic,  I would love to focus on effective time management that I’ve learned in the UED 102 classes with Dr Suraya Binti Sulaiman.

I have to admit that I have never implemented any daily schedule before this in my single life. So, this is a new thing to me and I think that it’s absolutely useful for us. Without wasting time, this is the example of mine and I hope you just turn a blink of eye at my messy calendar. PicsArt_08-08-10.07.37               My commitment calendar

As you can see at my calendar, those are my fixed commitment for past few weeks and it will change over time in order to adapt with my new schedule this September.

For lecture time, I spent about 5 to 6 hours per day for now time being starting from 8:00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. After that, for my own study or revisions, I allocated about 4 to 5 hours per day and last but not least, I took some of my ample time during weekend to work on my assignments, did laundry and sometimes spent quality time with my friends at the nearest town and supermarkets as I could explore more about Penang while strengthening our bonding.

 4- JOB TASK ANALYSIS

Job task analysis assessment is actually to assess our own daily time management whether it’s good or not. They’re often required in each day to construct a balanced daily to-do list. Job task analysis also needed to analyse our time management so that we won’t wasting time on something that is not useful for us at all. So, this is my job task analysis based on my Fixed-Commitment Calendar.dsc_1036-e1533765669436.jpg                   My job task analysis

Based on the picture, I could conclude that I am currently in compliance with all the time division for a day even there’s some addition of time in a certain thing and so do the other way round.

 5- PRIORITISED TO-DO LIST

Prioritisation and organisations are really crucial in our daily to-do list. This things can make us more effective in our each day as we’ll be more organised and all the matters that we need to do could be done on time. Things that need to be done as soon as possible have to become our priorities and tasks with the shortest time should be the top of our to-do list while the last but not least priorities are for the tasks that have the longest time.

But, remember that we have to consider others if the project is a group work and we shouldn’t take things for granted just because our to-do list as it might affect the others.  So, here is my to-do list for this interim week.picsart_08-09-06-42-38.jpg                         My to-do list

In a nutshell, my to-do list helps me a lot to keep me on a right track as I could priorities all the things that I need to be done as soon as possible.

6- MEMORY STRATEGIES

Every human being in this world has their own capabilities to remember something. It’s depends on one’s ability to adapt itself to everything.

To be honest, I personally find it difficult too to memorise all the things that I’ve learned especially in subject that I don’t really like. In addition, it becomes more difficult for me whenever I’m having insufficient rest and sleep. In the previous class with Dr Suraya Binti Sulaiman, I answered the exercise that has given by her to know where am I in using the memory strategies and this is my result.PicsArt_08-09-08.45.26 Based on my result, I just found out that my memory strategies are still not that good because I just got 5 over 10 marks. So, from this lesson, I realised that I need to improve my memory strategies so that I could survive in this tertiary study levels. I need to be more understood about what I’ve learned in the classroom, keep practicing it and organise my note. I need to be more organised in making my note and learn to participate actively in the classroom because these suit me well as I’m a visual and kinesthetic learner.

7- ORGANISATIONAL STRATEGIES

Organisational strategies are the management of topics and notes by classification into their group or type in order to make it easier to memorise especially for Pharmacy students.

I did some exercises with Dr Suraya Binti Sulaiman which is to organise things according to their type and this is what I do actually. Screenshot_2018-08-09-07-38-51      Organisational strategies’ activity

For your information, at first I just remembered 8 over 12 things only because I just use my own method in memorise information which is try to read it over and over again but in this case, I just had time to read it three times because the time given is too short. However, after I using the organisational strategies,  I finally could remember all that things and I think that I should implemented it in my study so that I could remember things faster.

 8- CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES

Concentration is the ability to direct one’s attention accordance with one’s will. Based on my experience as a student over the years, I always find it difficult to concentrate in a long period because I tend to get bored easily especially if the subject doesn’t catch my interest to know more about it.

Then, in the previous class, I did the exercise to know my concentration level with Dr Suraya and this is my result.PicsArt_08-09-10.02.48

As you can see, I got 8 over 10 marks for this activity and this indirectly shows that I’m good in concentrate but still not good enough.  So, to upgrade my concentration, I have to follow my schedule strictly and I need to change my mind set so that I could still concentrate even when I’m doing my work though the subject doesn’t interest me. Frankly speaking, UED 102 lessons have give me lots of knowledge in order to improve my study skills. So, I’m so grateful because in this interim week, there’s UED 102 subject and I could learn something new.

9- CONCENTRATION CHARTS

picsart_08-09-11-43-31.jpg

So, from this concentration chart, I found out that one of my main problem is sleepy in the class. So, I need to take prompt action regarding this matter like sleep early so that it won’t affect my concentration on the next day.

10- READING TEXT

Furthermore, in this topic, what I need to do is to read the text given by Dr Suraya and then apply the SQ3R method. So, this is the text that I have to read.Screenshot_2018-08-09-11-55-30Screenshot_2018-08-09-11-56-01

And this is my SQ3R for the text :dsc_1037.jpg

dsc_1038.jpg dsc_1039.jpg

dsc_1040.jpg dsc_1041.jpg

 11- NOTE-TAKING  STRATEGIES

Note taking strategies is extremely important because it is can be related to our own understanding about certain subject. So, if our note is good, we could revise as well when we recite that note. Below is my result on note-taking strategies. PicsArt_08-09-01.43.17.jpg

As you can see, I got 9 per 10 marks and this indicates that I’m okay enough yet I still have to improve my note-taking strategies so that I could do a really good one. So, what I should improve is, I have to edit my notes within 24 hours to recall what I’ve learned in the class and this is very important because we, as a human being constantly forgot what we have learned even that things just a few moments ago. So, I need to do it as soon as possible to have a long-term memory.

13- NOTE-TAKING EXERCISES USING CORNELL METHOD

As you know, in this topic I need to watch a video and have to make a note on Crash Course Study Skills Taking Note video by using the Cornell method. So, this is what I get.dsc_1042.jpg

13- GPA WORKSHEET

img-20180809-wa0010.jpg

Based on this learning outcomes, I have targeted to get at least A- for each subject in Diploma of Pharmacy every semester. This is because I have set to get 4.00 CGPA for my first Diploma as I want to get the Vice-chancellor Award during my convocation to make my parents happy and proud of me. So, I have to strive for my own excellence to get glory sooner or later in Pharmacy course.
